A 100% custom built house of that size? That’s got to be 9 months to a year of building time at least - maybe a year and a half+ depending on how big it is really supposed to be. It also appears Fitz had it furnished and it’s been lying there dusty for a while. This would tell me that house has…
“I wanted you to see the dream.”
Okay, I am going to try to prepare my thoughts in a way that makes sense because my fangirl feels are in the HIGHEST of place right now. Did you know Tony Goldwyn tweeted me? Yeah, that happened so you know my ass ain’t thinking straight but I will do my best with my commentary on this scene.
“It’s a beautiful house. New but built to last."—Fitz
The scene starts off with this line by Fitz. I love it because it speaks volumes to me. This house, her house, their house is symbolic of their love. Their love is new but built to last. It is new in terms of them still learning things about each other. It is new because they have yet to have a chance to embrace one another in the open. They have yet to have the chance to walk in their love. They are in love with each other but they have not been able to be IN their love. They have not basked in being them.
Fitz is telling Olivia about the house & she asks him, “Is this where you’re staying?" He responds, "No. It’s not really ready to live in. It needs a good cleaning.”
Sounds like more symbols to me. This house, which is a representation of their love, is not ready to be lived in yet. It needs a good cleaning. This talk, it has to happen. They need to lay all of themselves out there in the open for the other to see. It is time that they go into those closets & clean them skeletons out. Clean out all of the dirt. Clean out all of the baggage that is holding them back. Everything that is not allowing them to be GREAT together.
“If I told you about him. If you knew, who I was, you would have run in the other direction."—Olivia
I loved this because it was Olivia being vulnerable in a way that we have never scene before with Fitz. ”If you knew, who I was, you would have run in the other direction." Olivia feels unworthy of love. Her mother "died" when she was young & her father sent her away. She is unloved by the two people who are supposed to love you unconditionally—your parents. Her mother "died" so she can’t show her love & the one parent that is alive, instead of loving her, he sent her away. She was alone—not in the sense of people that was around her but she was alone, in her head, in her heart, to deal with the pain from losing her mother. She was alone & she dealt with this alone. The one person who should have been there & loved her in her mother’s absence wasn’t there.
She feels like everyone is going to run away from her, so she builds herself up into the Olivia Pope that we see today. She holds back. She runs before she is left.
“I would not have run. I would have protected you."—Fitz
He is telling her that NO MATTER what, he was going to be there for her. He is not scared of her past or her fears because he has a past too. His past scares him as well.
”I fixed the elections, he is my father, I ruined you!"—Olivia
This line means so much more if you look in between the lines. Olivia knows that fixing the election broke Fitz a little. It made him feel like he wasn’t enough, it made him feel like everything that his father had said about him was true. There is also the fact that, had she not fixed the election, & Fitz had not won, that they would have been together. They would have Vermont. This would be their reality. In this weird way, I feel like Olivia feels like, by fixing the election, she also put a stop to them or what could have been them.
“I just…I wanted you to see it at least once….This house is yours. Ours. I had it built for us."—Fitz
Then The Light starts playing…
“When it looked like there was a chance for us, I brought the land and I had it built. I couldn’t really be mayor but you can make jam. And there are bedrooms for lots of kids….This was going to be you and me raising a family and growing old together in this house. It was supposed to be our house Livvie. And I just wanted you to see it at least once. At least once before I sell it. I wanted you to see the dream."—Fitz
Hold on one second…
Okay, I’m back….Nope, I lied, I thought I was back but I’m not. I completely lied to you. I am not okay…
